Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)

2022-11-18

Project introduction

The Sustainable Palm Oil Round Table Initiative (RSPO) is a global organization that unites multi stakeholder groups to advocate sustainable palm oil. RSPO was established in 2004 to promote the production and use of sustainable palm oil for the benefit of mankind, the planet and prosperity. RSPO members and participants come from different backgrounds, including oil palm plantations, oil palm product manufacturers and retailers, and environmental and social non-governmental organizations, covering many countries and regions that produce and use oil palm products. The main objective of RSPO is "to promote the development and use of sustainable palm oil through supply chain cooperation and dialogue among stakeholder groups".

Scope of certification

Oil palm products may experience many production and logistics links between growers and products. Any batch of palm trees and palm kernel oil can choose one of the four supply chain mechanisms approved by RSPO for trading:

1. Plantation Identity Protection System (IP)

2. Certification and non certification separation system (SG)

3. Mixed certification and non certification system (MB)

4. Book and Claim Certificate Transaction (BC)

Certification advantages

RSPO certified growers account for 18% of global palm oil production. (2014)

RSPO members have a large share in the global palm oil production and sales market.

Non governmental organizations in important social and environmental fields have paid much attention to the process with greater transparency and credibility.

Because all members must accept RSPO certification, the value of RSPO certification is universal.

Buyers with a sense of social responsibility and environmental awareness are willing to buy products produced in a responsible way at a higher price.
